Movement in Sculpture

Almost a year ago, I watched an episode by SheerLuxe featuring jewellery designer Alona Shelemy and her brand, ByAlona. Her work immediately resonated with me, not only for its refined aesthetic, but for the intention and movement embedded within each collection.

For my Studio 1 project, I set out to reimagine a pair of earrings from her Tides collection, approaching the design as a journey rather than a static object. My concept explores the merging of feathers and motion, capturing the lightness, flow, and quiet strength found in natural movement. The forms are designed to feel as though they are caught mid-drift, echoing the way feathers respond to air and gravity.

Using a combination of fold-forming and synclastic forming techniques, I sculpted smooth, organic curves that emphasise fluidity and rhythm. Copper was chosen for its responsiveness, allowing for precision while maintaining an expressive, hand-formed quality. The surface was finished with a liver of sulphur patina, creating depth and contrast that enhances the sense of movement and shadow.

I am proud to share that this design was recognised and selected for inclusion in a mock campaign photoshoot for Zimmermann, an opportunity that further reinforced the narrative-driven approach behind the work.

This project reflects my ongoing interest in storytelling through form, where jewellery becomes an extension of motion, memory, and material exploration.
